Eyes downward, hooded. Her face showed the aftermath of crying. She didn't want to cry, but it just ... happened. A long, seemingly exaggerated, sigh escaped her lips and she pulled up her fur-lined hood. Even though it was a warm, beautiful day outside, she felt cold. Wearing three layers of thick clothing was enough to earn her many a passing stare or ogle. Whenever her eye met one of the starers, they turned away quickly. Acting as if they had just been observing everything, and that they're eyes had only locked because she looked up at the same time they passed their's over her. Another sigh escaped as she pulled her coat tighter, wrapping her arms around herself, dirty blonde hair escaping the pony-tail it had been kept in the night before, while she slept. 'Why...?' She asked herself. She asked herself the same question every day. Every hour, every minute. Every second.

A pep in her step: that was the best way to describe the way Bernie pranced down the street. She was covered by a gray sweat shirt that read "Master Beta." The suggestive undertones always put her in a good mood. She was wearing simple jeans and slip-on shoes, both blue in color. She seemed to be extraordinarily happy today, whistling a tune. It was one she had heard in the club she was performing at the night before. It was catchy.
Slung over her shoulder was her purse. It would seem that she was enjoying a nice day on the town. Bernie enjoyed everything. She couldn't help but wonder why the over-dressed girl in the coat wasn't enjoying the day though.
Bernie only took a few steps past her before her whistling stopped. 'That's weird... I wonder what's wrong... Maybe I can help!'
Turning around, Bernie skipped to catch up with the girl again. She ran up in front of her and bent down to look in to her hood.
"Hello? Are you alright?" she questioned.

Karina jumped back slightly, the hood slowly slipping off her head. She pulled it back over and looked to the right, down at the ground. Her sad, beagle-like eyes glanced quickly up to the girl. She shook her head slowly, brushing a new shed tear from her face as she said in a nearly inaudible voice, "Does it really look like I'm alright?"

Bernie shook her head, her hair flying about and settling over her eyes.
"No, of course you don't. Why else would I ask?" she laughed, brushing the hair from her eyes. She smiled brightly at the girl, searching her for a moment in an attempt to see if she could help anything. Her eyes were only distracted for a moment. 'Shame on me,' she thought with another giggle, 'this is no time to scope out some eye-candy!'
"So... what's wrong? It helps to tell people. And it's said that complete strangers are the best listeners."

"I've never heard that before." Karina replied lazily, still hardly audible, a touch of Russian accent could be caught when she went louder on 'I've'. She began to go past Bernadette, moving around her slowly, being sure not to accidentally bump into someone. Her scarf didn't seem to move at all with her motion, her long jacket only fluttered slightly with her movements. 'Why do some people try to help?' She asked herself, rubbing the bridge of her nose, which had sweat forming on it.

Bernie scowled, only for a second, before turning around and rushing to the girl's front again and stopping her.
"Okay, maybe you don't believe that. So allow me to introduce myself," she said, extending her hand and smiling cheerily. "My name is Bernie. I got to school around here. How are you?"
Bernie was trying very hard to cheer the girl up. She hated to see people upset. Inside, she couldn't help but pray that she could help the girl.

She looked at Bernadette's extended hand, wary towards the idea of touching it. She wasn't, really exactly sure what to do with it. In Alaska she hadn't really met anyone, and in Russia you normally didn't greet using hands. "What, pray tell, do you want me to do with that?" She asked, still quiet, emphasizing 'that', bringing out her Russian accent once again. As she spoke she gestured with an extended index finger, at the outstretched hand of Bernadette.

Bernie eyed her own hand for a moment and thought. "I guess I want you to... shake it," she said, her smile never failing. "It's a silly custom, but it has a decent origin, I suppose. Just think of it this way: if I wasn't offering my hand, I'd be hugging you!"
Bernie was curious about this girl's accent, and her displeasing attitude. 'She acts like the world is out to get her... That's silly...' she thought.

"We don't do that where I am from." Karina shook her head, but eventually she took the proffered hand and shook it. Before she withdrew her calloused hand again. Speaking louder this time, which truly showed off the extent her Russian accent, she spoke, "I'm Biriukova, Karina."

"Ah, you must not be from around here... Biriukova is a pretty uncommon name for a girl. And I'm sorry that I don't know how you're used to greeting people. I am willing to learn though."
Bernie stood up perfectly straight. She hoped that she hadn't insulted Biriukova, though she couldn't get over how odd of a name that was.
